What a mess.
But it’s real.

Nothing is perfect here.
Hair is messy.
Emotions are mixed.
The room is loud and quiet at the same time.
But this is the truth, not filtered, not posed.

We spend so much time trying to look perfect.
Trying to be someone.

Am I good enough? Do I matter?
It’s a constant performance.
Carefully rehearsed, always in control.

Let’s stop performing.
Let’s start dancing.

Running. Falling. Laughing.

We’re human.
We’re messy.
And maybe that’s the point.

Yellow high heels with galaxy pattern insoles surrounded by small lip-shaped objects on a white surface.
A pair of yellow and black high-heeled shoes placed on a white surface. Surrounding the shoes are various makeshift sculptures resembling hands with red and beige colors, made from what appears to be modeling clay or similar material. There is also an oval mirror with a yellow rim, a round container with red material, and a metallic faucet on the upper left corner.
A collection of novelty items on a white surface, including yellow plastic handcuffs, a pair of yellow and black sunglasses, and several toy fingers with red and beige painted nails.
Colorful children's toy with lipstick and high heel shoe shapes, including a yellow container with pink and red accents, and a black and yellow Pierre Hardy shoe.
Pair of yellow high-heeled shoes, nail polish bottles, hairbrushes, and makeup items on a bathroom sink with a mirror.
Yellow high heels with lipstick tubes and brushes inside, casting a shadow on a white surface.

Sato Gallery is thrilled to announce a new group exhibition: The Blooming of a Heritage. The exhibition celebrates the theme of “heritage”, exploring its many facets through the works of 10 contemporary Japanese artists. Like the full bloom of spring, each artwork reinterprets heritage, — cultural, technical, or philosophical — offering fresh meanings and new artistic expressions.
Organized by Sato Gallery and co-curated with guest curator Yuki Gomez, this exhibition offers visitors an inspiring journey where tradition meets the vibrant energy and creativity of each artist.
The season of spring, reflected in bold colors, luminous materials, and refreshed forms, serves as an underlying theme of the exhibition. Some artists embody heritage through generations of meticulous craftsmanship, while others reinterpret cultural motifs or explore universal concepts through a modern lens.
A diverse range of mediums will be on display, including painting, ceramics, and textiles. Many artists are presented in Paris for the first time, making the exhibition an unique and exciting discovery of the Japanese art world.

A REAL WOMAN
2024
The Artichoke, The Gallery Season 4, UK.

Diversitile #2
Ceramic installation
2023
61W x 81H CM

Nighttime city street with blurred moving cars, illuminated buildings, and the Shard skyscraper in the background.
Six posters displayed on an outdoor wall in an urban setting. The posters feature various images, including a woman with pink hair and perfume, a close-up of a person's torso with measurements, a pattern of pensive puzzle pieces, a person sitting in a decorated room, a woman with glasses, and a woman in dark clothing sitting on a couch.

Diversitile (2023) by Eri Maeda

With ‘Diversitile’ Eri Maeda elegantly showcases varied female forms to create a poignant critique of societal beauty ideals - encouraging women to look at themselves in a new light, and inviting the viewer to think about how women perceive themselves and are perceived, in the context of societal norms. With each tile representing the bust of a differently shaped woman, Maeda cleverly plays with the idea of the perfect body, whilst also exploring the breast’s position as a fundamental symbol of womanhood - whether for trans women who may desire them, trans men for whom they may feel foreign, for those who wish theirs were larger or smaller, for those who may have undergone mastectomies. As well as highlighting the complexities of identity, and celebrating difference, the artist reminds us that we are all part of a community - unique individuals who are stronger when connected and supporting of each other, just like the tiles in her work.

Curator’s comment: I love the way Eri uses the breast, a part of the body inextricably linked with womanhood, to question the very notion of femininity being dependent on particular physical attributes. By presenting breasts of different shapes and sizes, some altered or removed because of life-saving surgery, she cleverly highlights and celebrates physical diversity. By representing different female forms as interconnected tiles, she also reminds us that we are part of a wider community, and stronger together.
